Trying to think of fun family activities and keeping everyone entertained during the holidays can be difficult. With a long school break, the kids quickly become restless. Even the adults can start to get a bit stir-crazy with various sets of in-laws and cousins staying for extended periods of time. But there are a few surefire ways to beat the cabin fever blues and get your family back to enjoying their time together!
Best Holiday Movies – The Classics
Though we might often think otherwise, movies don’t need to have flashy CGI graphics or excessive violence to entertain the whole family. When it comes to the best holiday movies, less is more.
Movies are one of the fun family activities that families can enjoy any time of year, but I really encourage you to make time this holiday season to sit down to watch a classic film together – such as It’s a Wonderful Life or the original Miracle on 34th Street.
These timeless tales, even though shot in simple black and white, are still able to excite wonder and imagination in every child, from 1 to 92! Classic villains like ‘Mr. Potter’ and the sheer magic of believing in Santa Claus make these films irresistible.
Whichever film you choose, just be sure to grab some snacks and a hot beverage. My personal favorites are homemade hot chocolate or hot apple cider (don’t forget the cinnamon stick!). Your whole family will be begging to do this kind of night more often 🙂
Crafty Ideas For The Holidays
Crafts are a great way to bring kids and adults together around a table – without sitting down to a meal! A classic craft that makes a fun family activity all winter long is constructing a gingerbread house.
If you’re extra creative in the kitchen, you can bake your own gingerbread housing (cookies) using specially designed molds.
An alternative method is to fasten graham crackers around a milk carton and decorate to your liking.
Fun Outdoor Activities – Get The Family Outside
Though the chilly winter weather may have us running for a seat around the fire and a warm mug of hot cocoa, there are several fun outdoor activities for the whole family.
If you’re lucky enough to have a white Christmas, bring the kids (and adults!) to a large hill or park for some sledding fun.
Build a snowman or igloo in your front yard, adding fun accessories to your snowman like a hat and scarf. You can even create instant decorations for your igloo by spraying dyed water on the interior or exterior.
If there’s not enough snow for a trip to the local sledding hill or to make a snowman, even a light dusting can give you enough to make a snow angel or have a snowball fight!
Two words: Snow Castles! Remember those shovels and pails that you use at the beach to build sand castles? No need to keep them in storage during the winter, take them outside and build yourself some serious snow castles! (and post your photos to our Facebook page!)
No snow? No problem! Create a “winter warmer” obstacle course where participants have to run around cones, jump between rows of sticks, or even hula hoop to help stay toasty and warm!
There are literally tons of fun family activities that will get you doing something exciting and new together over the holidays. Give these suggestions a try, or use them as inspiration to establish your own traditions.
