Halloween doesn’t always have to be about candy and other sweet treats. When you get creative with food ideas, you can even make fruit and vegetables part of your Halloween celebrations! Putting together a veggie platter for a Halloween party, or to share with your office or child’s classroom is a great, healthy alternative to the sugar and fat-laden treats often seen at this time of year. These snacks and platters are also a great way to show off your new knife skills and put your ceramic knives to work!
1. Bloody Bat Ears
Beets are a delicious, nutrient-packed vegetable that many novice chefs are afraid to tackle – but you shouldn’t be! Add this colorful vegetable to your menu of fun and festive Halloween food ideas and create some Bloody Bat Ears! First, scrub the beets thoroughly and slice off any remaining greens or stems. Then, using your ceramic chef knife, thinly slice the beets so that they resemble the thickness of a thick-cut potato chip. Lightly season with olive oil and salt, and then roast in the oven for 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees. They will continue to crisp up as they cool, resembling spooky, bloody bat ears!
2. Salad Graveyard
With this idea, even lettuce can be ghoulish! To make this show-stopping appetizer or lunch, simply place a handful of salad greens in the center large butcher block or platter. Using your ceramic knives to ensure precision and even slices, cut two carrots and two spears of white asparagus into 2-3 inch pieces. Stand them up around the lettuce to serve as the ‘fence’ of your graveyard. For the gravestones, slice a cucumber at an angle to create oblong slices in the shape of graves and place these upright in the salad leaves. Fill the rest of the space with vegetables of your choice. Put this delicious salad on your Halloween party food menu and serve at your next gathering to spook your guests!
3. Cauliflower Skull Centerpiece
To give a run-of-the-mill veggie platter an eerie Halloween twist, look no further than this creepy skull centerpiece, which you can create with just a head of cauliflower and your ceramic knives! Take the cauliflower and gently break off a few florets until it resembles an oblong skull shape. For the teeth, use your ceramic paring knife to cut out a spooky grin. The ceramic paring knife is incredibly sharp and ideal for such precise work. Cut out a couple spaces for eyes and insert cherry tomatoes for that ghoulish look. Congratulations, your creepy cauliflower centerpiece is now complete!
4. Pumpkin Fruit Platter
A great alternative to the traditional Halloween candy is the natural sweetness of fruit. Make this healthful food idea more seasonal by creating a jack o’lantern, and no one will miss the chocolate! First, peel and carefully segment several clementines. Shape them into a pumpkin design, leaving spaces for the eyes, nose, and mouth. For the mouth, use your ceramic paring knife to slice a pint of strawberries in halves or quarters, depending on their size, and arrange them into an evil grin. Slice grapes in half and place skin-side up in the eyes, and put a handful of blueberries into the space for the nose. Slice up a few celery sticks for the stem, and you have a healthful pumpkin platter that everyone at the party will enjoy!
